Unit 4 Local Government - County Governemnt

Standard(s):
SS8CG5 The student will analyze the role of local governments in the state of Georgia.
a. Explain the origins, functions, purposes, and differences of county and city governments in Georgia.
b. Compare and contrast the weak mayor-council, the strong mayor-council, and the council-manager forms of city government.
c. Describe the functions of special-purpose governments.

Essential Question (s):
Why do we have County and City government?
How do Counties and Cities come into being?
What services do County and City governments provide?
Where does the revenue come from to provide these resources?
What is a special purpose government? What does it do?

Warm up:
What is a charter?
A: It's a law enacted by the state legislature creating a city.

Today in Class:
Today we read about the origin, function and purpose of County government. Students read a handout about the history of Georgia counties then using this hand out and the textbook Ch. 16 section one answered the following questions:
1. What is the origin (how it was created) of the county government?
2. What is the function (objective) of county government?
3. What is the purpose of county government?
4. How are county and city government different?

Students need to know the basic services a county provides and it's reason for being.

Local government vocabulary quiz Friday January, 9th. Test over local government in two weeks approximately January 20th give or take a day or two.

Today in Georgia History:
January 7, 1789 Georgia voters, participating in the first U.S. presidential election, cast their vote for electors. A month later, Georgia's electors met in Augusta and voted for George Washington as the nation's first president.
